A pastry chef’s complaint helped spark a real war - can you guess where?
It was Mexico. A French pastry chef said army officers looted his shop near Mexico City. He demanded 60,000 pesos. France’s king backed him.

When Mexico refused to pay, French warships blockaded its ports in 1838. Then they bombarded the island fortress guarding Veracruz.
A retired general, Santa Anna, came back to fight. French grapeshot hit his leg, and doctors had to amputate it.
In 1842, back as president, he had the leg dug up. It got a state funeral in Mexico City. In 1844, rioters dug it up again.
