The Untold Story

Townspeople hauled a lost Dutch airliner out of the mud. It was Albury, Australia, 1934.

The Dutch plane was racing from England to Melbourne when an electrical storm cut its radio and left it lost.

Albury flashed its street lights in Morse code, and a radio announcer asked people to drive their cars to the racecourse.

Their headlights lit a runway, and the plane landed safely before getting stuck in the mud.

At dawn, the town dug it out. It flew on to Melbourne and won the race’s handicap prize.
