Emil Zatopek of Czechoslovakia had already won the 5,000 and 10,000 metres. His wife Dana won javelin gold the same day as one of them.

Then he ran the marathon, the first of his life.

Halfway through, he ran up beside Jim Peters, the world record holder, and asked if the pace was too fast.

Peters, only kidding, said it wasn’t fast enough. Zatopek sped away.

Peters dropped out with cramp. Zatopek won in an Olympic record.

He is still the only runner to win all three at one Olympics. Not bad for his first marathon. Follow for more stories like this.
