The Untold Story

In 1898, two lions in Kenya killed so many railway workers that construction on an entire railway just stopped.

Workers building a railway across the Tsavo River started disappearing from their tents at night. The lions dragged them out one at a time.

Terrified workers refused to keep working.

It took nine months and a British engineer named John Henry Patterson to finally track down and kill both lions.

Patterson later sold their bodies to Chicago’s Field Museum, where the actual lions are still on display today - still missing their manes, a mystery scientists still debate.

Historical Discussion

💭 Patterson claimed the lions killed 28 people, but old railway records and other estimates put the number as high as 135 - the real toll is still debated today. The Field Museum has run genetic and hormone studies on the actual remains trying to figure out why these two lions had no manes at all.
