The Untold Story

A battleship came for rebels said to have cannons and dynamite.

It was Rio, 1904, and it started with a vaccine: Brazil had made smallpox vaccination mandatory.

A newspaper printed the plan: no certificate meant no school, no factory job, no marriage, not even voting.

The city exploded. Crowds fought police, smashed gas lamps, and destroyed twenty two streetcars in one night.

When troops stormed the last barricades, the trenches were empty. The dynamite was wood wrapped in silver paper. The cannon was a lamp pipe on wagon wheels.

Nine hundred forty five were arrested, and the mandate was suspended. Four years later, smallpox killed almost sixty four hundred people. A battleship, sent after fake cannons. Follow along for more of history’s strangest stories.
